Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and the crumbling of the world order are forcing Greens to do some long, hard thinking about security. This report for the Green European Foundation does just that, with few taboos. Using the concept of “neo-idealism” as a starting point, it draws lessons from the experiences of the Central and Eastern European countries that were the first to raise the alarm about the revival of Russian imperialism.

The essays and interviews in this report explore a values-driven approach to military and civil resilience. They highlight the importance of European defence and support for Ukraine, of diplomacy and democracy promotion worldwide and of strengthening the social fabric at home. This approach is all the more relevant in the face of a US administration that scorns Europe and can no longer be trusted as an ally.

In this report, you will find:

  • Essays on neo-idealism, international democracy support, Ukraine's diplomacy towards the Global Majority, Visegrád foreign policies, and defence as a commons
  • Interviews with Justīne Panteļējeva, Tomas Tomilinas, Atte Harjanne, Gabriela Svárovská, Ivan Kłyszcz, Mārtiņš Staķis, Carlos Corrochano, Ilmar Tamm, and Airi Tooming
  • Political recommendations

This report is part of the project New Idealism for a Disrupted Europe. The project was carried out in 2025 and 2026 on behalf of the Green European Foundation (GEF) by Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks (NL), VONA (BE), Association for International Affairs (CZ), and Degrowth Estonia. It has benefited from the financial support of the European Parliament to GEF.
